Summary

Collaboration features that help students learn by building together

Unity asked us to redesign their education platform for high school classrooms. I led research synthesis and concept direction for classroom collaboration and in-editor support, so students spend less time stuck, and more time making games.

How might we increase the learnability of Unity's education platform to foster collaboration and support for high school students and educators?

Problem

Learning to use Unity is hard, especially in classrooms.

Because of current frustrations, Unity decided to create a new, in-browser game creation engine to increase accessibility in high school classrooms and grow more Unity users long term.

Student and teacher pain points around learning Unity

01.

High Difficulty

Learning to use the platform is hard for users with no prior game development experience.

02.

Heavy Hardware Requirements

Heavy hardware is needed to run the engine, so Unity has been largely inaccessible in secondary education, even as educators want to teach game design in high school classrooms.

Reflection

Learning about Game Development

01.

Getting familiar with the domain

Jumping into this project, I had little prior knowledge about game development. I got familiar by building mini-games and talking through platforms with my team. To design for specific users, it's important to learn the processes, terminology, and experiences behind them.

02.

Prioritizing collaboration and support

After looking at the key insights, the direction of the solution was clearer. Collaboration and support for students and educators, through peer sharing and help in the editor, became the focus.
